    Abstract Combination of Assur groups is one of important methods in conceptual design of planar linkage mechanisms. Although there are not many researches in this arena, the authors attempt to address two fundamental problems associated with the combination of Assur groups: 1) description and reorganization of Assur groups and other kind of groups; 2) Combinationcompatibility among Assur groups. The paper also presents a couple of examples to demonstrate how to realize the design by using the methods described.

    Abstract It has been a challenge in computer-aided conceptual design of mechanism systems as how to describe the kinematic requirements and the functions of a mechanism so that computers can easily recognize, and eventually make automatic selections and combinations among many different types of mechanisms (those combinations include mechanisms of single and multi-degree of-freedom, and connected in series, or paprallel, or overlap,or feedback). In this paper, a methodology is presented to describe the kinematic characteristics of mechanism systems and their associated requirements so that they can easily recognized by computers. A practical approach is to define 'a kinematic function' to represent the kinematic characterizations of a.mechanism. It reflects the input and output motion of a given system. This kinematic function can regularly and accurately be described using function units and trees (any function tree consists of more than one function units and is regularly expressed). Because of its uniqueness, the process of mechanism synthesis can be easily recognized by a computer. The methodology demonstrated in the paper has universality and has been successfully incorporated into a software, which has been proven to be an useful tool for the conceptual design of mechanism systems.

    AbstractThe selection of mechanism type is one of the important aspects in conceptual design of machine products. The paper applies the set theory for representing the attribute items of kinematic function to reflect the kinematic state and the function quality to reflect overall performances of the function unit for some complex design task. It gives a set-theory-based mode for the selection of mechanism types, in which precise reasoning by computer is combined with fuzzy appraisement by human. By precise reasoning at first, the computer selects from mechanisms database those mechanisms that can meet the kinematic requirements of the function unit to be solved. And then the function qualities of the selected mechanisms are appraised by human approving, which is actually a process of fuzzy match. This approach avoided the difficulty that the computer cannot yet effectively process fuzzy information and is suitable for the selection of both single-degree-of-freedom (DOF) and many-DOF mechanisms. The selected mechanisms can thusmeet the requirements not only of the kinematic function, but also of the function quality. The approach presented in the current paper has been successfully applied to the software development of computer-aided conceptual design of mechanism systems.

    AbstractIn order to ascertain the assembly relationship between assembly features of the parts being assembled under the assembly environment, the paper presented a new way for virtual automatic assembly based on assembly features’ modularized. This method analyses the assembly features of the single part or sub assemblies and then saves the features as different function modules. Using inherited way to finish assembly action with assembly data module and assembly relationship module which can ensure the consistency of data of the assembly features during the design. Taking involute straight teeth gear for example to explain the practicability and superiority of this method .

Besides,the paper points out that currently courses system and teaching plans are not harmonious to train innovators and inventors.

    Abstract: This article presents the mechanism combination’s modes, fundamentals, reasoning rules, and realization methods in the automated conceptual design of mechanism systems. According to the combination form between two function units, with the aid of morphology matrix, applying a recursive mode of mechanism combination and the reasoning system based on set theory, the function units’ solutions in the form of combination mechanisms can conveniently be generated. The theory and method presented in this article can simplify the process of mechanism combination and the reasoning rules and are suitable for the combination between not only single-degree-of-freedom mechanisms, but also many-degree-of- freedom mechanisms. They have successfully been applied to the software development of automated conceptual design of mechanism systems.

    AbstractIn order to realize computer aided connection between mechanisms, researches on mode, compatibility and approach of connection between mechanisms are carried out in detail, and thereby, a model for connecting mechanisms was upbuilt. According to concrete requirements for a function unit whose mechanical solution will be obtained by connecting mechanisms, this model has two kind of modes that are for minimum granularity function unit and for non-minimum granularity function unit respectively. The modes can been programmed and have been successfully applied to exploitation of software for connecting modes can be programmed and have been successfully applied to exploitation of software for connecting mechanisms with this software, and this laid a good foundation for realization of intelligent CAD of mechanical kinematic scheme.

    mechanisms are connected is made by man according to the information of their function qualities. Under the guidance of the thought, author explored principles and methods for automated connection of mechanisms, which can be identified by computer, and applied these research results to software development for automated synthesis of mechanisms. It was realized that two rigidity mechanisms were reconnected automated.

    Abstract Task requirements of automated selecting mechanisms were compartmentalized into motion function and function qualities. We described the motion function in standardization methods and represented function qualities in human language. In the process of automated selecting mechanisms, the solutions meeting requirements of motion function were captured by accurate ratiocination that were completed by a computer. These mechanisms and the appraisals about their function qualities were stored in knowledge base. Designer can select them according to function qualities of each mechanism and complete fuzzy ratiocination. The reasoning method for automated selecting mechanisms is so predigested, and automated selecting mechanisms become reality. The difficulty of CAD for mechanical kinematic scheme is solved and then CAD for mechanical kinematic scheme has a good base.

    Abstract A design mode of intelligent CAD for mechanical kinematic scheme in which mankind cooperates with computer is put forward after analyzing the factors restricting its development, and an object-oriented intelligent CAD system design model in which each subject ( subsystem ) has its independent design mode and method was established according to design characteristics of different design layers in design process. It makes possible the expansion and realization of intelligent CAD system for mechanical kinematic scheme, and simplifies its design, maintenance and management of the CAD system program.

    Abstract Thesystem for automated selection of mechanisms is divided into problem space and solution space and a mode for automated selecting mechanisms is set up, which is based on set theory and a working means of that man cooperates with computer. From problem space to solution space, different mapping ways are used for kinematical characteristic and function quality. Namely computer selects the mechanisms satisfying kinematical function request by exactly inference. These mechanisms form a new solution space W'J. According to the function quality of the mechanisms in W'Jman selects the usable mechanisms tallying with the request of function quality and a optimum mechanism from W'J. Therefore, the difficult problem of standardized describing the request of selecting mechanisms and the information of a mechanism is solved. According to the advanced principle, the automated selection of mechanisms has good come true.

    Abstract This paper brings forward a manner that computers discern mechanism function by resolving mechanism function into kinematic function and function quality. The kinematic function describes kinematic characteristics of a mechanism with four attributes, motion form; motion axes, movement direction and rate of movement, and has uniqueness. It is rational basis of computer in automated conceptual design. Function quality reflects performance characteristic and is one of the mechanism attributes. It is described with humanity language and is the basis that human make strategic decision in automated conceptual design. This manner describing mechanism function can be discerned by computer and tallies with the design thought of humankind. So, the difficult problem that mechanism functions can’t be discerned in automated conceptual design has been solved in this paper.
